Radiohead is contributing 14 songs to the soundtrack for the upcoming documentary The Island President, which will open in New York on March 28, 2012. The songs come from the band’s back catalog, including the tracks ‘Idioteque’, ‘Everything In Its Right Place’, ‘Reckoner’, ‘House Of Cards’, and ‘How To Disappear Completely’.
According to IMDb, The Island President “follows the globe-trotting journey of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world, who, after bringing democracy to his country, takes up the fight to keep it from disappearing under the sea.” Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke commented on the struggle with climate change in the Maldives:
“Unless something is done to stop rising sea levels they will lose everything. The country will be under water. Some of our music was used to help tell the story."
The documentary won ‘Best Documentary’ at the Toronto film festival and will be screened at the Sundance film festival this week. After the New York release in late March, the film will have a limited release in Los Angeles and San Francisco on April 6. Radiohead is currently in preparation for their world tour supporting their album The King of Limbs. It will be interesting to see if any of the back catalog used for the documentary will make it into their setlist.
