What’s up world!! Tis’ I,
Pat Maine. I am all smiles
right now. The video came out
great and its about to get its
viral grind on. I just wanted
to take some time and let
people in on the concept of
the song/video.
Vividend
sent me the beat a few years
back and I was super feeling
the folkiness to it. I wrote a
hook and it kinda sat that way
for quite some time, I’ve
learned many a hard ways not
force inspiration. One night I
was cold chilling with my big
brother, Task Rok, just
conversing on hip hop kinda
like we normally do. He
brought up the beautiful point
that the only way to truly be
original is to write YOUR
story because nobody has read
your story before. He said
something to the affect of,
”Everybody tends to write
about the same thing, somebody
else’s story. I’ve never
lived in the hood or popped
bottles on hoes so how could I
write something original or
amazing about that.” and
that struck inspiration and I
carried that home and stayed
up all night writing.
I
started with my story from the
beginning of my hip hop
influence. Talking about the
culture shock of moving from
San Diego to Heber, UT and the
places I found inspiration as
a little kid deciding to be a
rapper. Ya know, kid poems and
tupac. I was the only kid I
knew that wanted to rap beside
one other close friend whom
stopped doing it after like a
year and a half.
I go onto
talk about the move to Salt
Lake City to try to be a part
of the culture I silently
observed. Haters were much
more vocal when I first came
onto the scene. Although
looking back I had a lot of
dues to pay so I’m sure I
mistook that as hate.
Discovered, as we all do
eventually, that nobody is
REALLY trying to pull you up.
Caught a few cold shoulders
from people already stapled in
the scene and a lil bit of
hate but also some love from a
few key people that remain
relevant in my life. I was
part of a crew called
Otherground and it was a
beastly crew. Had Smash
Brothas, Linus Stubbs, Task
Rok, Yoga Flame Kane, Odetta,
Hakeem Arafat, and more that I
can’t think of off top. As
talented as all those people
are it just didn’t fall
together at the end of the day
and it sadly came to an end
cause we all had different
paths…..But…
If you
build it they will
come..
I’ve had a lot of
things that my eyes believed
to be high potential. I’m
pretty glad to say I did all I
could to have them reach that
potential and saw them through
to the end. Most of those
things didn’t turn out how I
imagined but progress was
always made. The people that
didn’t see my potential then
certainly do now and I’ve
earned that respect and glad
they didn’t pull me up when
I reached out. Today, I’ve
put a lot of miles behind me
and see so many more miles to
go. There are still more
people I need to prove my
potential to and I’m just
gonna keep doing it the way
I’ve already done. Work
until the work done is
undeniable.
Hardships are
just a part of the job specs
but I’m Alive+Well.
Love
You-
Pat Maine
